Step Up

May 15, 2017 Philippa Pomeranz

One of the best ways to help your girls reach their full potential is to step away so they can step up. Yet as parents and carers, it can be a tricky balance knowing when to step away or provide a helping hand along the way as your daughter navigates life.

Imagine there is a flight of stairs your daughter is trying to climb to succeed at all the things she would love to do well in. As long as you are standing on that step helping her every step of the way, your children can never move beyond that step.

Here's 3 Ideas to support your girls stepping up to shine.

1. LISTEN
No matter how young or old your daughter is, get into a regular practise of listening to what she wants. Listen to her fears, listen to her dreams, listen to her woes, listen to her highlights. Listen to it all and you will get really good at listening and knowing when it's time to step away so your daughter can step up.

2. HANG WITH THE TENSION
It's not easy seeing your children fall or attempt something and continually missing the mark. But when you stand in the way of them resolving their own tension you block them discovering new ways to pursue their passions and navigate life socially and emotionally. Hang with your own tension to create the space for daughter to create and adjust her path in the pursuit of stepping up to her greatness.

3. UPSKILL
You don't have to sit on the sideline the whole time well away from the step if your daughter is never quite reaching her mark. Create opportunities to up skill your daughter in several areas at home and outside the home that builds on her portfolio of life learning so that these skills can then be applied to all areas of her life.
